Secondary Education at Rivington Park

The Senior School opened in September 2005 and can accommodate classes of up to 16 children in each year group from 7-11.

Our philosophy is based on straightforward principles. We are committed to small class sizes, teaching excellence and the recognition of all our pupils as individuals. By promoting academic achievement, a questioning mind, independent study skills and clear values we equip young people to thrive in the modern world.

We believe that small class sizes are essential if we are to give all pupils the individual contact time that will allow them to fulfil their potential. We can plan our teaching and learning strategies carefully around individual children so that they enjoy a flexible curriculum that reflects their interests, strenghts and weaknesses. This promotes a sense of security and belonging as children experience success, encouragement and personal achievement in their day to day school life. It is the foundation for self-confidence and an increasingly independent approach to learning which will carry our children through to examination success and equip them with the skills to take up a valued role in further education, employment and the community.

By supporting the development of our pupils as they participate in a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural and social activities we aim to provide a well rounded education. Discipline is firm, positive and caring. We expect all our children to understand and value each other, their immediate local environment and their place in the global community.

**The school is not academically selective. The full spectrumn of ability is taught and all pupils this year took a minimum of 11 GCSE examinations.

** 2009 added value results are impressive again this year.

2009 GCSE Results v CAT Predictions

CAT3 assessment give a strong indicator of individual ability and a useful guide to expected GCSE outcomes for different ability levels. School expects that the benefits of small class teaching, flexible approaches to teaching and learning and our supportive small school ethos should translate to substantial added value attainment at GCSE. The longer pupils are part of the school the more significant this is expected to be.

The average added value v CAT3 predictors was 19.98 points (19.98 additional GCSE grades than predicted based on ability)

The average added value for pupils who had been at Rivington Park (for three years or more) v CAT3 predictors was 24.6 points (24.6 additional GCSE grades than predicted based on ability)
